Parliamentary written question on hyperactivity in children

Jesse Norman, the Conservative MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, asked what steps the Health Secretary would take to encourage research into the extent of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) amongst children. New Health Minister Dr Daniel Poulter simply responded that the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including ADHD. Norman then asked what steps the Health Secretary is taken to ensure that psychotropic drugs are only prescribed to children in accordance with NICE guidelines. Poulter explained that health care professionals are expected to fully take into account NICE guidelines, although they do have the right to prescribe these drugs if they feel it is clinically justified and in consultation with the parent or guardian.
