4BC
Mornings: Martin Whitley (ex MP), teacher and anti ADHD drugs
campaigner speaks with Greg Cary on Strattera. The drug approved by the TGA
(Therapeutic goods administration) and placed on the Australian PBS
(pharmaceutical benefits scheme) is responsible for over 100 adverse event
reports including suicides. Whitely says thse are only the tip of the iceberg
with 2% of adverse events ever reported.
The
ADHD drug Strattera has a black box warning. That is the highest possible
warning a drug can rate before it is taken off the market. The list of predicatable
outcomes for this drug includes death and suicidal ideation.
When
the Federal Government says the benefits of Strattera outweigh the risks Greg
asks how can you measure nebulous benfits such as less fidgeting against the
risk of suicide and death and why is there not a call for Paliamentary inquiry
on this drug?
