Bipolar, I feel is a spectrum. However, it has obviously given birth to this "Sub-clinical,normal variation bi-polar condition". I think it is stupid. We all have bipolarity, we all have obsessive compulsions but we do not all have the "Disorder". I feel that this is the key. What do we class as Disorder?
ReplyDeleteAll kids have some attention deficit and hyperactivity. Again.....what is the disorder?
You are fighting an excellent fight. Medication should be the very final solution and backed with evidence for accountability that is not purely in keeping with tick box diagnostics.
I think Jung had it all planned out and psychiatry in the fifties started to catch on.
ReplyDeleteHe went over to the east. Studied their cultures and spiritual beliefs. In the aspect of of the shared consciousness that he felt we share as people.
However, modern Psychiatry is loosely based on eastern wisdom and moved away from the strong medical model in situ years ago.
Certainly, it is more humanistic, holistic and less hierarchical to work within the ideals of those original insights. It is easy to throw a tablet at someone. It can take a long time to learn who you are, to know oneself. It takes seconds to swallow a tablet. So, we must ask ourselves. Has the legacy of the Jungian ethos which touches modern care (CBT, Mindfulness, SFT, Patient Centred care e.t.c) being challenged by the medical model of psychiatry? If so, this could be very harmful and preventative of service development and quality mental care.
People in these years are convinced by scientific figures than basic spiritual truths. These spiritual truths have been the back bone of quality psychology for decades and the mould of virtue in humanity since the dawn of time.
Competition between various schools of psychiatric practice needs to be resolved.
Good luck to you all and well done.
