Dear Colleague, 

Many social scientists, medical colleagues and educationalists have found the imminent arrival of DSM-5 in May 2013 to be of enormous concern due to child safeguarding issues which is our shared paramount concern: 

I have launched a petition as part of the campaign to alert educationalists, social scientists, medical practitioners and parents to the risks of over-prescription of psychotropic drugs for school aged children in the U.K. After some discussions with Professor Tim Kendall, who co-authored the NICE Guidelines on ADHD, I am convinced he is sympathetic to the obvious risks that DSM-5 (to be published May 2013) poses to the Safeguarding of Children in the U.K.

I would ask you therefore to consider putting your signature on the petition asking N.I.C.E. to give urgent guidance for all childcare professionals about the risks of DSM-5 particularly in relation to Safeguarding their health and emotional wellbeing.

If you could also pass on to your teams and other colleagues then we would be well on course for a 2,000 target by Christmas, which would be a great ‘present’ for the children of the U.K. and would I am sure NICE to take notice and consider the issues raised..  

We must act now as ethically practicing childcare professionals to restrict the usage of DSM-5 in the U.K. as it will dangerously broaden the diagnostic width of the categories for mental illnesses in children and so lead to ‘false positive’ diagnoses and subsequent unnecessary psychotropic medications.

I  believe N.I.C.E. could play a crucial role in this campaign.

•         Better Safeguarding of Children from the side-effects of drugs and potential harm to their neural pathways.

•         Promoting  psycho-social explanations of difficulties rather than ‘within child’ pathologies.

•         Making  a stand against the abuse of power of psychiatry and the ‘market expansion’ of the Pharmaceutical Multi-national Corporations into childhood.
